Saturday evening during NBA All-Star Weekend in Indianapolis, the best three-point shooters from the NBA and WNBA will face off in a battle to determine who is the best long-distance shooter. Steph Curry, the star of the Golden State Warriors, and Sabrina Ionescu, the New York Liberty guard, will take part in the three-point contest.
Curry and Ionescu are without a doubt the best shooters in their respective leagues. They are set to decide who is the best this weekend. Sabrina Ionescu and Steph Curry will take the court after the NBA three-point contest.
The event takes place on February 17, 2024, at 8:00 PM ET (which is 3:00 in the morning in Romania’s time zone) at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. The announced time is approximate, as the event will begin after the NBA Three-Point Contest ends.
In a press conference before the event, Steph Curry said that he is excited to compete against one of the best shooters in basketball right now.
Ionescu, the WNBA three-point contest champion, said it will be a “pinch-me moment” when she steps on the court with Curry, whom she has admired since she was a child.
During last Summer's WNBA All-Star weekend, Sabrina Ionescu set a new record for both leagues, scoring a total of 37 points. After the competition, Ionescu sent Curry a message on Twitter, challenging him to a three-point contest.
A few days later, Curry went to ESPN and accepted Ionescu’s challenge, saying he wanted to break her record. Almost six months later, the NBA announced that Steph Curry and Sabrina Ionescu would be at the 2024 All-Star Weekend to determine, once and for all, the true champion of the three-point contest.
Steph Curry said he was impressed by Sabrina’s choice. Curry has already established himself as the best three-point shooter in NBA history, with 3,640 made threes. His total number of made shots is 667 more than Ray Allen’s (who is in 2nd place).
Each player will have 70 seconds to take all their shots. The player with the most points at the end of the round will be declared the winner. Steph Curry will use NBA balls in the competition. Sabrina Ionescu will use WNBA balls.
The rules will follow the standard NBA 3-point contest format, with a small twist. There will be five racks of five balls placed around the 3-point line. Four of the racks will have four standard balls, worth one point each, and one “money ball” worth two points.
One of the racks will be filled entirely with “money balls”. Each athlete will be able to choose where this rack is placed. In addition to the standard balls and “money balls”, there will be another special ball that could make a big difference in the competition. There will be two “STARRY Range” balls, which will be from long distance. These shots will be worth three points each.
The event is set to be broadcast on the TNT channel in the United States of America. The event will also be available on the TNT App streaming platform. In Romania, the event will not be broadcast by any television channel.
